About
Be it is a spark plug in your motorcycle, filter candles (for water purification), those chocolate-coloured insulators in high tension power grid lines or the dental crown for prosthetics- all have one thing in common!

They all are processed via the common method of “sintering”. Thus, the heat treatment and consolidation via sintering has a massive role in detecting/controlling all the final properties of these products. Usually, such control is achieved via the attainment of suitable phase, composition, and microstructure of the materials system. Hence, this becomes of customary importance to discuss and educate the materials community at large on the important aspects of the sintering process.

To propagate such dissemination of knowledge, the Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Department at IIT Patna will be organizing a three-day National Symposium under the broad theme of “Sintering” in offline mode during May 16-18, 2024.

The Sintering Symposium aims to enlighten researchers in the core and allied field of sintering (of ceramics, metals, composites etc) about the principles and practices concerning shaping & consolidation issues and subsequent characterization tools and techniques employed for the assessment of microstructure and properties. The theme is centered on the fact that the sintering route modifies the structural and functional properties of the systems (locally and globally). Starting from modelling and simulation of sintering processes, development of microstructures and their correlation with structural, functional and biomedical properties will be the major areas for the Sintering Symposium. Additive Manufacturing for energy and biomedical applications also remains as our key themes.
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering was established in the year 2012 and was renamed Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (MME) in 2018. The department focuses on the fundamental and engineering aspects of conventional metallurgy, ceramics, polymers, and composites.

Apart from the vibrant teaching activity, the department also aims to train students (via various ongoing research activities financially supported by Govt. and private industrial organizations) with the fundamentals and expertise of design, synthesis, characterize, testing, and production of various materials along with the knowledge of new technologies in production and processing of new and advanced engineering materials.

The MAPS laboratory in the MME department primarily works on the investigation of the PROCESS-STRUCTURE relationship of high-temperature materials at different length scales. This is usually carried out via probing into synthesis (via materials chemistry routes) and processing (e.g., consolidation, sintering, shaping, etc.) issues for nanoparticles, oxides, ceramics, etc. and trying to understand the complexities involved in the process. The investigation methods include a variety of structural characterization tools. The final objective of MAPS laboratory is to provide/come up with a sustainable process with the option of industrial scalability.

Indian Institute of Technology Patna is one of the new IITs established by an Act of the Indian Parliament on August 06, 2008 with an intake capacity of 120 B.Tech. student’s in 3 branches.

Patna which was known as Patliputra has been a center of knowledge since long has been attracting visitors and scholars from many parts of the world such as China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Sri Lanka, among others. This has been a land of visionaries. Some of the legends from this region include Lord Gautam Buddha, Lord Mahavir, Guru Gobind Singh, the famous astronomer Aryabhatta and the first President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad.

IIT Patna has ten departments. These are Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, Civil & Environmental Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Humanities & Social Science department.

The Institute has developed modern facilities that are fully equipped with the state-of-the-art facilities.
